How do I register a death in Nepal?

मृत्यु दर्ता कसरी गर्ने?

Register a death (mrityu darta) at the ward within 35 days for free. Who can register it, what to bring and why you need the certificate.

Short answer

A parent, spouse, son or daughter of the person who died registers the death at the ward office of the permanent address or where the death happened. It's free within 35 days, after which a late fee applies. Bring the dead person's citizenship (or another ID), your own citizenship and the hospital's death report if they died in a hospital.

Where and when

The ward office of the dead person's permanent address or of the place where they died. Registration is free within 35 days. After that you can still register with a late fee.

What comes next

Once you have the death certificate, the usual next steps are a relationship certificate from the ward listing the heirs, then the inheritance transfer of land and bank accounts.

Common problems

Why does the death certificate matter?

You need it to transfer land and other property to the heirs, close or transfer bank accounts, claim insurance, receive social security allowances as a widow or widower and for most services that depend on the person having died.

Nobody in the immediate family is available to register it.

Another family member aged 18 or older can be the informant if the parents, spouse and children aren't available.

The person who died was a foreign citizen.

Bring their passport and visa, proof they lived in that ward and a recommendation from their country's embassy in Nepal, along with the informant's passport or citizenship.

They died abroad.

Register it with the Nepali embassy in that country, or bring the foreign death certificate attested by the embassy to your ward.

The person died before the registration law existed.

Deaths before the 2033 registration act can't be registered. Ask the ward chair to certify the death instead.
