What it is

Nepal has issued e-passports since 17 November 2021. Each one has a chip that stores your photo and fingerprints, and every new or renewed passport is now an e-passport. You can choose 34 or 66 pages. Adult passports are valid for ten years.

There are two ways to apply. Regular applications go through your District Administration Office and take about a month. Fast track is only available at the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, costs more than twice as much and promises the passport in three working days.

The regular fee, the documents and the minor and lost passport rules on this page come from district office pages on the Ministry of Home Affairs site. The fast track and 66-page fees come from the 2021 schedule and 2025 reporting, because the Department of Passports website was not loading when we checked.

Who needs it

  • Any Nepali citizen who needs to travel abroad for study, work, a labour permit or a holiday.
  • Anyone whose old passport has expired, run out of pages, been damaged or been lost.
  • Children travelling abroad. They apply with a minor identity card instead of citizenship (see the separate guide).

What you need

  • Pre-enrolment form printout with its barcode

You get this after filling in the online form at emrtds.nepalpassport.gov.np.

    Official
  • Original citizenship certificate and one photocopy

    Official
  • National ID card or proof of your National ID number

DAO Kathmandu lists this as required. Register for National ID first if you don't have a number.

    Official
  • Fee payment receipt

    Official
  • Your old passport and a photocopy, if you have one

    Official
  • Proof that you live in the district, if your citizenship is from another district

DAO Kathmandu asks for a migration certificate from your ward plus property or tax papers.

    Official
  • Recommendation letter from your office, if you are a government employee

    Official
  • Extra photocopies of your citizenship

Some district offices list two copies. Carrying two saves a trip to the photocopy shop.

    In practice

In practice items aren't in the official rules but are commonly asked for at the counter.

How it works

  1. 1

Make sure you have a National ID number

District offices now check it at the counter. If you don't have one, register at your District Administration Office or a National ID enrolment centre before you book.

  2. 2

Fill in the online pre-enrolment form

Go to emrtds.nepalpassport.gov.np and choose the application type (first passport, renewal or lost). Type your name, date of birth and address exactly as they are on your citizenship certificate. Pick the office and an appointment date, then save the reference number.

  3. 3

    Pay the fee

Pay Rs 5,000 for a regular 34-page passport using the payment options shown with your application, and keep the receipt. Fast track at the Department of Passports costs Rs 12,000.

  4. 4

    Go to your appointment

Take the barcode printout, original citizenship, National ID proof, receipt and old passport. Your photo, fingerprints and signature are taken at the office, so you don't need to bring photos. DAO Kathmandu accepts the application the same day if your papers are complete.

  5. 5

Wait for the SMS or check the status

Regular passports take about a month to reach your district office. You get a text and email when the passport is issued, and many district offices post lists of passports they have received.

  6. 6

    Collect it in person

Go back to the office where you applied with your receipt and citizenship. Check the spelling of your name and your date of birth before you leave the counter.

Common problems

My name or date of birth on my old passport is different from my citizenship.

The e-passport always follows your citizenship certificate. If the citizenship itself is wrong, get it corrected at the District Administration Office first, then apply. Don't type a spelling that doesn't match the certificate, because the counter will reject it.

I don't have a National ID number yet.

Get one before you book. DAO Kathmandu lists National ID proof as a required document, and enrolment can take a separate visit with its own queue.

I paid for fast track but it's been more than 3 days.

Fast track depends on the department's central system. In May 2025 a server failure delayed fast track passports by up to a week, and a virus stopped work for a week in November 2024. Leave a buffer of at least a week before any flight or visa appointment.

I lost my passport. Can I get a copy?

No. You apply for a new passport and the old one is cancelled. Inside Nepal the fee is double the normal fee, so Rs 10,000 for a regular 34-page passport. Bring a photocopy of the lost passport if you have one.

My parent is elderly and can't fill in the online form.

DAO Darchula notes that elderly, sick or disabled applicants and minors can hand in a form filled in by hand instead of the online pre-enrolment. Call your district office first to confirm they accept it.

How long is the passport valid?

Ten years from the date of issue for adults. Passports for children under 10 are valid for five years.
